Ross McMurtrie’s family has been farming in McLaren Vale since 1878. His vineyard is located behind another local institution, the Salopian Inn, on the road that bears his family name. You could say that Ross knows the area pretty well and growing grapes is in his blood. The vineyard enjoys a panoramic view of the Willunga foothills and receives cooling breezes from this escarpment and the nearby ocean. The soil here is made up of beautiful brown sandy loam, the sort in which you could grow six-foot carrots. We are lucky that Ross chose to focus his efforts instead on a lovely Brunello clone of Sangiovese, which produces a perfumed, juicy style of wine.
